At the east end of Perdido Key is a strip of National Seashore called Johnson Beach.
Inaccessible by car, the far eastern end near Pensacola Pass is a favorite place for boaters to anchor and enjoy a day or more relishing in the beauty of the seashore.
The remnants of Fort McRee, which was built in the 1820’s, lies buried in the sand. This high point of land provides a fabulous view of Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island, the Navy Base on the mainland, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. In the winter, with the cooler months, the water is clearer after all the algae of late summer has died off. On this particular day I was surprised at how blue the water was. Contrasting with the bright green of the longleaf pine and the bright, white sand, it was an example of the breathtaking beauty of the Coastal South.
The original is a 75 x 30” oil on canvas. It was donated to the Cultural Arts Center of Orange Beach for an auction to raise money for the art programs it provides. It is available as a print on canvas in the original size of 75 x 30” and larger. Please contact the artist for details. Margaret@margaretbiggs.com
