“A Beloved Place” was inspired by the inland water’s of the Gulf Coast. The many bays and bayous, lagoons and sounds provide the nature enthusiast with endless adventures of discovery. Often populated by the longleaf pine, this tree grows in abundance along the southern coastal plains of the United States, it’s straight trunk rising nobly above the grasses, palmettos and scrub oaks.
The viewer is intentionally guided into the piece by the seaweed littered shore, dominating the foreground, then narrowing and extending into the painting’s center, enticing the viewer to follow. The foliage of the pines were treated as individual shapes resting against the summer sky. Carefully placed, the negative space of sky behind the foliage, trunks and branches are pleasing shapes, adding to the overall harmony of the piece.
It is the simplistic beauty of the Gulf South that intrigues me. In my mind I can hear the crickets sing and feel the heat. I can imagine the smell of the salt in the air. There are no majestic mountains in view and the water is not the glorious colors of the Caribbean, yet this little corner of the world has its own quiet beauty.
The original painting was donated to a charitable auction, which raised money for the organization Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
