After a mere 18 months of retirement, my husband was offered a fabulous job in the South Bay area of San Francisco. Just three months later, we had moved from our beloved Bayou home to the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The hills that stretch up the coast and Central Valley of California from Santa Barbara to Sacramento are covered in wild oak grass which dries to a beautiful, golden brown in summer. It's an iconic California scene familiar to many.
Yet when we moved here, it was spring and the hills were bright with a vibrant green. The simple landscape with its rolling hills covered in high grass and dotted with large oaks trees, seem to move to a gentle rhythm.
Another big change came in life’s journey full of mystery, challenges and awe-inspiring beauty! The green hills would soon change to gold and then again to green. The placid movement of the California Hills stretching out before me is a reminder to walk through life peacefully, as time and change carries me along.
I have crossed over,
And now to sustain…
It is so much easier when the ride is smooth.
Like a slow moving train
on a straight, clean track
with the curves and hills
and broken tracks,
I sometimes crash.
With time I find my way back
to the smooth track.
And I am supported
when I have crossed over
from the broken tracks.

The fine quartz sand is constantly shifting where the Gulf of Mexico meets the shore, redefining the water’s edge and creating pools that may last only a day.
The gentle curving line where the sand meets the shore is constantly moving. In cooler winter months, the Gulf is extraordinarily clear and often an aqua blue.
The shallow pools invite us to wade through their sparkling water and tempt us to swim, even on a cold day.
