The light refracting off the Gulf floor in shallow water creates beautiful lines that move and dance. This original was purchased for a lovely home located on Destin Harbor.

"The Glorious Yellow Pine" on display.
There was a period when I was highly inspired by the work of the Canadian painter, Emily Carr. Her images of the Pacific Northwest included highly stylized depictions of the area's vegetation. Painting the foliage of these Yellow Pines as a grouping of stylized shapes, her influence on this triptych is very clear.

This print on canvas of the painting "Broken Pear" works beautifully with pastels, tans and whites. Though the palette is soft, the composition is strong. This broken pear shell is a favorite of mine amongst the many unbroken shells in my large shell collection.

"Island Oats" on display in a home in Orange Beach, AL.
"Island Oats" is a depiction of a large growth of Sea Oats at the far west end of Santa Rosa Island. As part of the National Seashore and a long walk from parking, there are never many people there. The joy I feel while in this place of stark, natural beauty, is communicated in the way I painted the sky and in the movement of the oats. The owner of this lovely home was shopping for paintings to hang in his dining room. Decorated in traditional wood furniture and heavy drapes, I initially thought paintings in a similar warm palette would work best. So I brought several over and realized I was mistaken. Back to the gallery I went and returned with three paintings inspired by the beauty of Santa Rosa Island. The cool palette and softer imagery contrasted beautifully with his furnishings and drapery. We were both very surprised and pleased! With consent from the collector, they are available as fine art prints.

"Gulf Coast Autumn" in her Florida home.
The fall greets us along The Gulf with drier weather and windy days. Alone on this stretch of Santa Rosa Island one clear, cool day, I found myself with my back to the glorious Gulf, enjoying the dancing sea oats, the clouds drifting in from the north and the shadows moving on the quartz sand. It was a perfect afternoon.

"Rhapsody," "Into the Light" and "The Dampened Sand."
These three paintings were painted as a triptych, as shown in this photograph. Using the same palette, I am representing a few of the many gifts the seashore offers us. Though the triptych works beautifully hung together, the canvas prints could also be hung individually. With consent from the collector, these three pieces are offered as fine art prints.

"Just Off Paradise"
While standing at the end of a dock on Santa Rosa Sound, I witnessed a moment of the sunset's reflection in a blaze of yellow on the deep blue of the darkening sky. This painting is now at home in California. With consent from the collector it is available as a fine art print.

"Schoolhouse Beach, Horizontal Format" Divided and printed to be displayed as a triptych.
The "Schoolhouse Beach" series was inspired by a beach on Washington Island which is north of Door County, Wisconsin. There is no sand, just countless white rocks. When observed closely, one will see the very pale colors within the whites of nature. Of course I saturated the color significantly, yet people still recognize the images as depictions of Schoolhouse Beach. It is a magical place. Available as a limited edition print in larger sizes only.

"Caroline" in her waterfront home.
"Caroline" began as simply a magnolia flower and evolved into a representation of a friend. She knew I painted flowers and asked me to bring the magnolia over for her to see. Because I did not want to influence her in any way, I was careful not to reveal the name of the painting or anything about it to her. Yet, she immediately fell in love with the piece. It was then I told her that I had named the painting for her. Of course she was very pleased. With Caroline's consent, it is available as a fine art print.

"Within and Beyond"
This broken shell I have painted many times. Found on a deserted North Florida beach, I use it as an operating metaphor for middle age. The outer shell is broken while the inner shell remains intact. The way the interior of the shell reflects the light off it's perfectly winding spiral, contrasts beautifully with it's dull, broken and faded exterior. Symbolic of the virtues and rewards of a pure, inner life it inspires me to continue on. With consent from the collector, it will soon be available as a fine art print.

On summer afternoons in the Coastal South, huge cumulus clouds form and often bring rain. The vibrancy of the warm, green waters of summer, the blue of the sky with these enormous clouds lingering, and the breeze off The Gulf, is exhilarating! "Ocean Serenade" Pensacola Beach, FL.
Sitting in the Gulf with my chin just above the surface of the water, I was mesmerized by the gentle movement, the reflection of sky and the clarity of the water. Facing the beach, the white of the sand reflected off the waves accentuating their shapes and adding to the design. I chose to eliminate the sand and paint only the water and sky, placing the viewer in a place of limitless space. With consent from the collector, Ocean Serenade will soon be available as a fine art print.

"Symphony in Blue" in Key Biscayne, FL.
"Symphony in Blue" was a commission for a condominium on Key Biscayne. The designer wanted a painting based on a 24x48" horizontal named "Marina Morn." This imagery was inspired by the reflections of sailboats in a marina. Overlooking Biscayne Bay, the blues worked beautifully with the neutral decor and the brilliant blue of the ocean and sky outside the room's window. This is a 48x96" oil.

"A Southern View" in the collector's home, Gulf Shores, AL.
Just west of the Pass is Johnson Beach National Seashore, where the waves break far from shore and the pristine beaches can only be accessed by boat. There is a lake at the end of the peninsula surrounded by grasses and pines. During the winter months the Gulf is particularly clear and often very blue as opposed the it's vibrant green color of summer. I find the stark, simplistic beauty of The Gulf South breathtakingly beautiful. It is a stark, vibrant, uncluttered place that makes me feel liberated and free!

"Florida Horse Conch" in her Destin, FL home.
The Florida State Shell is the Horse Conch, a favorite subject which I have painted many times. It's outer surface is a bright orange when young, maturing into a paler orange and white with multiple whorls upon maturity. It later develops a crusty dark, exterior surface, while it's interior remains glossy peach. Both broken and whole I find this shell to be extraordinarily beautiful. Like several other of my shell paintings, this Horse Conch is suspended. Apex pointing upwards, I am speaking of the ability we all have to rise above the difficulties of life, keeping our head held high and ever conscious of the part of ourselves that never dies.

"Liquid Symphony" The painting in a sailboat's galley.
When moored in her native waters, the view out the portholes is the same as the view of the water as depicted in this painting. I am so grateful to the owner of this magnificent sailboat, for hiring me to paint this piece and for giving me full creative license! "Fluidity" on display in her Bayfront home, Pensacola, FL.
Far less linear than many of my water surface paintings, "Fluidity" was created with little reference to anything other than my memories and imagination. How mesmerizing I find the surface of the water to be with it's movement, changes in color and design!

"Rocks and Rivulets" on display in the collector's home.
The people who commissioned me to paint a piece for their dining room asked only that it be a certain size and that it be based on a smaller painting titled "Ebb Tide" because they liked the colors. Both of the paintings were inspired by a photograph I took of the rocks and rivulets that were formed during the ebb tide one afternoon on the California coast. Within this piece I painted an "invisible" woman. She sits on her left thigh and gazes upward, in profile. Her right knee is the blue rock towards the bottom, center of the painting. Her right breast is a brown rock just below center the center and her nose is just above. Can you see her? With consent from the collector it will be available as a fine art print.

"Sunset in the South" At home in Destin, FL.
There are four paintings in this series of the dunes after a storm had hit the Gulf Coast. The gradation of color from the shadows to the sunlit areas were so perfectly smooth. No one had walked these beaches since the tropical depression had hit! It was glorious! The wind over the fine, quartz sand left the beach perfectly smooth. A similar painting was purchased by the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach and will be available as a fine art print.
